• The Grid Method

You may find the grid method to work well for large works of art, especially landscapes or portraits. For this method to work, you need to have a physical image side by side to your paper. It will not work when drawing from observation.

First, grab the image you want to draw. (Tip: If it's a photograph, scan it and make a copy, you don't want to draw on the original)

Next, depending on the size of your image, choose a scale to go by that works for your image and create a grid system over your image, usually every inch or half inch.

Finally, recreate your grid on the blank paper, using the same scale you chose for your image. Once you have the grids in place, you can label them for easy reference or simply start to fill the drawing in one grid at a time! This helps you to focus on smaller details and overcome the feeling of being overwhelmed by the size of the image.
